About Jurong Island

Singapore’s Jurong Island

Home to the World’s Chemical Giants

JURONG ISLAND – CENTREPIECE OF SINGAPORE'S CHEMICALS INDUSTRY

Jurong Island today is home to more than 90 leading petroleum, petrochemicals, specialty chemicals and manufacturing companies from all over the world, and boasts a total gross investment of more than S$27 billion. Jurong Island, one of the innovative and strategic projects undertook by JTC, was formed by the amalgamation of seven offshore islands of Singapore. It is now the centrepiece of
Singapore's chemicals industry.

Significant role of Jurong Island in Singapore's chemicals industry

Jurong Island plays a pivotal role in the growth of Singapore's chemicals cluster. On Jurong Island are long-standing tenants as well as young budding companies. Together, these Jurong Island companies more than doubled the chemicals clusters' manufacturing output since the island's reclamation.

Impressive portfolio of companies on Jurong Island

Jurong Island has been selected by several Top 50 Global companies and big names in the industry as the operation base. Companies that are now part of the Jurong Island community include BASF, Celanese, Exxonmobil, Dupont, Mitsui Chemical, Chevron Texaco, Shell and Sumitomo Chemical. Several new additions like CIBA, Huntsman, Natural Fuel, Nexsol and Tate & Lyle have also set up plants on Jurong Island.

Synergised network for efficiency on Jurong Island

One of the strong reasons for the impressive portfolio of companies that are currently on Jurong Island is the well-established infrastructure on the island. Companies on Jurong Island are vertically integrated and interlinked by the common pipeline service
corridor to create synergy and efficiency. Feedstock and products are supplied and dispatched from plant to plant via the network of pipelines, as the output of one plant is the input of another as a result of the cluster manufacturing arrangement. On top of plant to plant synergy, companies on the island reap economies of scale, enjoy increased operational efficiency and cost savings. All these are the benefits of the minimal requirement for storage facilities and long-haul distribution brought about by the intelligent infrastructure on Jurong Island.

“Plug & play” infrastructure for new companies

Jurong Island's “plug & play” infrastructure is an attraction to new companies. For companies that are setting up a plant on Jurong Island, they have nothing to worry about. They can directly plug into the existing infrastructure that includes ready land, a networked community of companies, a comprehensive set of amenities and a pro-business and secure political environment.

Innovative multi-million dollar projects – the Jurong Rock Cavern & Very Large Floating Structure

JTC continues to be enterprising and innovative in the development efforts on Jurong Island. It took a bold step in the development of Singapore's first underground rock cavern for oil storage, the milestone Jurong Rock Cavern project. Leading in the evolution of Singapore's chemicals industry, the Jurong Rock Cavern will be located at Banyan LogisPark, beneath the seabed of Banyan Basin. The development of this multi-million dollar project on Jurong Island, which started in February 2007, will augment the infrastructure on the island and provide strategic logistical support to the Jurong Island companies. The Jurong Rock Cavern is set to further enhance the existing synergy on Jurong Island.

In addition to underground storage for the land-scare Singapore, JTC is studying the feasibility of floating structures for oil products and petrochemical storage. The Very Large Floating Structure (VLFS) will be designed to be either moored to land or function as stand-alone units. The VLFS will take up only 5 hectares of foreshore space as compared to 20 hectares of land space for the same storage capacity of 300,000 cubic metres.

Offering intricate and highly-synergised land, sea and underground infrastructure, coupled with the utilities and amenities support and a robust network of companies, Jurong Island is the place to be for companies in the chemicals industry.
